The Wilkeson Coke Ovens, located in Pierce County, Washington, represent a crucial remnant of the Pacific Northwest's early industrial heritage. Constructed beginning in 1885 by the Wilkeson Coal and Coke Company, these beehive-shaped ovens were built using locally quarried sandstone and imported firebrick to withstand the extreme temperatures required for coal processing. Built in 1929 by the Crawford and Reid shipyard in Tacoma, Washington, Fireboat No. 1 is an outstanding, remarkably intact example of early-20th-century marine firefighting technology. Designed specifically to protect Tacoma's booming industrial waterfront, the 96-foot steel-hulled vessel was outfitted with a state-of-the-art propulsion and pumping system powered by seven 425-horsepower Sterling Viking gasoline engines. This formidable setup allowed the boat to maneuver rapidly through the harbor while simultaneously discharging up to 10,000 gallons of water per minute through its array of tower and deck monitors, making it one of the most powerful and technologically advanced fireboats of its era.
For over five decades, from 1929 until its retirement in 1983, Fireboat No. 1 served as the primary guardian of the Port of Tacoma, an essential shipping and timber-processing hub in the Pacific Northwest. Throughout its fifty-four years of continuous service, the vessel responded to numerous high-profile waterfront disasters, lumber mill fires, and shipboard emergencies, safeguarding the city's vital economic infrastructure.
