Ludwig Mies van der Rohe wanted to erase the boundary between human shelter and nature. He built a glass box. He hung this single-room weekend retreat between eight white steel columns on a wet floodplain along the Fox River. Dr. Edith Farnsworth paid the bills. Well, she paid most of them until she sued Mies over the $74,000 final cost. That was 1951. She wanted a quiet country escape, but she got a global architectural sensation instead. People stared. Curious tourists literally peeked through her floor-to-ceiling glass walls while she tried to drink her morning coffee.
Architecturally, the place changed everything. Mies used off-the-shelf industrial materials like H-beams and plate glass to create high art. He welded the steel seams by hand and ground them smooth so the structure looked seamless. No visible joints. It represents the absolute peak of International Style modernism. But nature ignored his design. The Fox River rose repeatedly, drowning the interior with brown mud in 1996, 2008, and 2015. Water ruined the expensive primavera wood wardrobe. Still, preservationists fought desperately to buy the structure at a Sothebys auction in 2003, shelling out $7.5 million.
Today, the National Trust for Historic Preservation runs the site. They got it listed on the National Register in 2004. Visitors still flock to Plano. They want to stand inside that radical experiment. A beautiful, deeply flawed glass cage. It proved just how hard it is to live inside a manifesto.
