LILAC, United States Lighthouse Tender National Register of Historic Places Listing

She is a survivor. Built in 1933 at the Pusey and Jones shipyard in Delaware, the United States Lighthouse Tender Lilac represents a vanished age of maritime work. Most old ships end up as scrap metal. Not Lilac. She still floats today at Pier 25 in Manhattan. She is actually the only surviving steam-propelled lighthouse tender in the United States. Inside her belly sits a pair of triple-expansion steam engines. They ran on heavy oil, driving twin propellers through thick harbor ice and heavy Atlantic swells. Crewmen shoveled, sweated, and swore in that engine room. It was loud.

But her main job wasn't just idling in the harbor. She worked. For decades, Lilac carried heavy cargoes of kerosene, coal, and fresh water to isolated offshore light stations. These remote outposts relied entirely on tenders for survival. Her crew also maintained massive steel buoys. They used a giant derrick mounted on her bow to hoist fifteen-ton navigation markers right out of the water for scraping and painting. A single slip of a winch cable could crush a man's leg in seconds. It was dangerous, bone-rattling labor. Yet, she somehow kept the vital shipping lanes safe. During World War II, the Coast Guard armed her with anti-aircraft guns and put her to work patrolling the Delaware Bay.

The Coast Guard finally retired the vessel in 1972. Then came decades of neglect. She sat rusting, waiting for the scrap yard, but volunteers stepped in to save her. Today, she serves as a floating museum. Her steel hull still smells of grease, saltwater, and old steam. You can actually walk her decks. Stand right next to her massive hoisting mast. She represents a time when maritime safety depended on sweat and heavy iron, not GPS satellites. It is history you can touch.
